The Economist elected as European Magazine of the Year

As one of the most innovative and successful media brands, The Economist regularly initiates public debates of social relevance.

At the European Publishing Awards 2019, the weekly magazine from Great Britain will be awarded as “European Magazine of the Year”, following the unisonous decision of an international jury. “Within turbulent times in politics, The Economist has a huge relevance and responsibility. With a clear commitment to highest editorial quality, the 175 year-old brand strengthens trust in journalism all across Europe. Its ambitious and demanding concept takes readers seriously – and also works well on the commercial side”, the jury says. During the past five years, the magazine managed to double its revenues from circulation. Most recently, the copy price was increased by 20 percent.
A Special Award goes to Der Beobachter. “The relevance of Der Beobachter in Switzerland’s magazine landscape is awesome. It unites best practice of investigative business journalism and high-level utility for readers. The long-term established brand has both an extraordinary strong circulation and high credibility. As a result, new revenue streams could be established such as a personalizable digital advisor in addition to the classical magazine publication. As a strong voice in Switzerland, the magazine is an example for high-level magazine journalism”, the jury comments.
“European Newcomer of the Year” is Frankfurter Allgemeine Quarterly. “Quarterly stands out by an eye-catching and consequent cover design providing high recognition. The magazine convinces by using a stringent product design and a clear visual language”, the jury says.
The European Publishing Awards honor the best digital products, magazines and newspapers of Europe’s various media industries, showcasing products, design and concepts, as well as tools, business models and publishing solutions. Media companies that create and market content-driven products were invited to participate, as well as their suppliers and service providers.
All awards will be distributed at the European Newspaper Congress from May 12 – 14 in Vienna. At the conference, 500 editors and publishers from European media companies share best practices, cases and strategies. Austria’s chancellor Sebastian Kurz will deliver the opening keynote. Friede Springer will be awarded for her lifetime achievement.
